Charcoal masks have been around for a couple of years now. There are charcoal masks you pull off (making you cringe when it starts to pull on the wrong place or just won't goddamn come off), there are charcoal face washes (nice and gentle cleansers), there are harsher exfoliants and there#s some kind charcoal product for your body, face and teeth. Charcoal came to stay and take over your instagram feed.
Obviously I jumped onto the charcoal train. I've tried toothpastes and peel-off masks and I love everything charcoal so... when I saw Rituals do a luxuriously packaged charcoal face mask POWDER I had to try it.
Check out my little quick and simple tutorial
First off, packaging.
Now, every store is going to try and reel you in with some kind of demographically targeted box or tube or tub. The same product can be made to look fabulous or disgraceful; like a political campaign, it's all about the presentation.

Rituals did not fail on this one, they'd be president. Their products are always packaged with a touch of class. The store celebrates tranquillity and serenity and the newly revamped packaging throughout the store (including new uniforms) do not fail this criteria.

Not only that, but value for money in this box is excellent. I happened to have also been looking for a face mask brush. Not only do you get a tub of 70g of charcoal powder, you also get a face mask brush with the Rituals logo and a ceramic bowl.
So, why a powder?
The powder formula from Rituals is different and that's exactly what attracted me to it. Now, the powder is great for ingredient related issues. The powder allows the company to sell a decent supply of product without adding unnecessary nasty chemicals. There's no moisture with the powder and that removes a lot of bacterial difficulties.

Another bright side to the powder is the fact you can mould the product to your needs. It is so user friendly and so made-to-measure for everyone.
Now on the other side, value for money. We all want to know we get what we paid for and the powder allows you to get many uses out of the mask.
How does it work?
You use a tablespoon full of powder and put it in your new and elegant ceramic bowl, add a couple drops of water and mix. Watch it sizzle for a bit, all you need to do next is apply the mask with your brush and sit around for 20 minutes. It'll start to dry up on your face and change colour (this is what you want)

The benefits are plenty:
1) You probably won't need a tablespoon of product, I only needed less than half and there was still some left over mix in the bowl so as far as value, this product will last you a while.
2) No unnecessary chemicals
3) It's called Your Wondermask Ritual and it does do wonders. It feels good and it just does it's job. It purifies and cleanses perfectly whilst on the other hand it is delicate. I've had plenty of face masks that have caused my sensitive skin to feel as though it were burning (seriously, burning) but this is actually delicate enough for even me.
4) Made to measure, this mask is YOUR ritual. You can choose how liquid or how dense you want the mask to be. Play around with what feels good to you.
5) You also get a beautiful brush and bowl.

However, like a chocolate bar with a lot of calories, every good thing comes with a cost:
1) The price may put some people off. Although I fully believe the price is worthwhile because of all the add ons (the brush, bowl and the amount of uses you can get out of the powder) £29.50 will make someone think twice.
2) It gets messy. The greatness is the fact you add how much liquid you want, the negative is that cleaning up afterwards is quite annoying. After you've just relaxed and pampered yourself, you just don't want to clean up. Having said that, you can clean up with a bit of water and you don't need anything special.
3) It'll take a bit of a trail and error approach to finding out how much powder works for you.
4) At the moment there aren't other choices, just charcoal. It would be great to see different powders, if that's possible, for different skin types.
The benefits far outweigh the costs so, if you're looking for your next face mask fix, try out the Your Wondermask Ritual. Get yours here.
